Canada Vehicle Imports๐Ÿ

RIV. CBSA. CUSMA. We Know the Route.

Importing a vehicle into Canada means navigating the RIV program, CBSA entry, Transport Canada safety requirements, and CUSMA duty relief. BorderTek coordinates every step.

Canada's 15-year rule makes JDM and grey market vehicles eligible a decade sooner than the US 25-year rule.

What We Import

Every Vehicle Class into Canada

US-spec, JDM, European grey market โ€” each has its own Canadian compliance path. We know all of them.

๐Ÿš—

US-Spec Passenger Vehicles

The most common import โ€” US-built vehicles entering Canada. Often CUSMA-qualified for 0% duty and need minor safety modifications.

๐Ÿš™

Trucks & SUVs

Full-size North American trucks and SUVs โ€” including models sold in the US but not offered in the Canadian market.

๐ŸŽ๏ธ

JDM & Grey Market

Canada's 15-year rule makes JDM vehicles eligible a full decade sooner than the US. Popular models from Japan become importable years earlier.

๐Ÿ๏ธ

Motorcycles

Street and touring motorcycles from the US or overseas โ€” RIV process applies, Transport Canada safety standards coordinated.

๐Ÿš

Vans & Commercial

Cargo vans, passenger vans, and light commercial vehicles โ€” compliance coordinated for both private and business imports.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ

15-Year Exempt Vehicles

Vehicles 15+ years old are exempt from RIV modifications โ€” simpler entry, no safety modification requirement, direct provincial registration.

Import Pathways

15 Years โ€” That's the Line

Canada's 15-year exemption rule is the defining factor in how your vehicle enters. We assess this first, every time.

SIMPLIFIED

15-Year Exemption

Canada's exemption rule applies to vehicles 15+ years old โ€” a full decade sooner than the US 25-year rule. Exempt vehicles skip the RIV modification process entirely.

  • โ–ธNo RIV safety modifications required
  • โ–ธNo RIV Form 1 / inspection needed
  • โ–ธCBSA entry + duty/GST still apply
  • โ–ธDirect to provincial registration
  • โ–ธPopular for JDM, EU, and US classics
Example: A 2009 JDM vehicle became eligible in Canada in 2024 โ€” but not in the US until 2034.
MODIFICATIONS REQUIRED

RIV Program

Vehicles under 15 years old imported from the US must go through the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV). Safety modifications are required before provincial registration.

  • โ–ธRIV Form 1 filed at CBSA
  • โ–ธRecall check โ€” Transport Canada
  • โ–ธDaytime running lights (DRL) if needed
  • โ–ธSpeedometer in km/h required
  • โ–ธRIV inspection at certified garage
RIV fee: ~$295 CAD + HST. Timeline: 45 days to complete modifications.
Compliance Requirements

CBSA. RIV. Province.
Three Layers, One Team.

Canadian vehicle imports touch three distinct compliance layers โ€” federal CBSA customs entry, the Transport Canada RIV program, and provincial registration requirements. Each layer has its own timeline, fees, and documentation.

BorderTek coordinates all three. From duty and GST assessment at the border to RIV modification sign-off and provincial inspection guidance โ€” we keep the process moving so your vehicle gets on the road.

Get a Canada Vehicle Quote
CBSA B3 Entry
Formal customs entry filed at the Canadian border โ€” duty assessed based on vehicle value, origin, and CUSMA status.
CUSMA Duty Relief
US-manufactured vehicles qualify for 0% duty under CUSMA. Non-qualifying vehicles face 6.1% duty on passenger cars.
GST on Import
5% GST is assessed on the vehicle's declared value at the CBSA border. HST may apply depending on province of registration.
RIV Form 1 & Recall Check
All non-exempt vehicles must complete RIV Form 1. Transport Canada recall database is checked โ€” open recalls must be resolved.
Safety Modifications
DRL, km/h speedometer, side marker lights, and other CMVSS items coordinated at a Transport Canada approved garage.
Provincial Inspection
After RIV clearance, a province-specific safety inspection is required before registration โ€” we provide guidance on provincial requirements.
How It Works

Border to Registration

02

CBSA Entry & RIV Filing

B3 customs entry filed at the Canadian border. RIV Form 1 submitted at the port, duty paid, and GST assessed. CUSMA origin certified where applicable.

03

Modifications & RIV Inspection

For RIV-required vehicles: safety modifications completed at a certified garage within 45 days. RIV inspection passed โ€” sticker issued.

04

Provincial Registration

RIV sticker, CBSA release docs, and title package ready for provincial MTO/SAAQ/ICBC registration. Your vehicle is on Canadian roads.
